Golden Gate Transit operates a regional network of bus services linking the North Bay, San Francisco, and Contra Costa County. It operates four Basic bus routes and twenty-one Commuter bus routes. It also operates eight Local bus lines on behalf of Marin Transit. All routes, with the exception of Route 40 and local Marin Transit routes, serve Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza.

Basic Bus Routes

These services operate daily between the North Bay and San Francisco, and between San Rafael and El Cerrito Del Norte BART station.

Routes 30 and 70 serve all bus pads along US-101, alongside Marin City. Route 30 also serves Sausalito via Bridgeway, while Route 70 serves bus pads at Spencer Avenue/Monte Mar Avenue in Sausalito, and north of San Rafael Transit Center until Novato. Route 101 operates as the express variant of Routes 30 and 70, stopping only at San Rafael Transit Center and ten stops in Novato (five northbound, five southbound).

Routes 30 and 70 provide a combined frequency of approximately every 30 minutes between San Rafael Transit Center and Marin City, while Routes 70 and 101 leapfrog at Downtown Novato to allow easy transfers between local and regional service, especially for travelers wanting local service south of Novato.

Route 40, on the other hand, operates via the Richmond Bridge

Commute Bus Routes via the Financial District

These services operate weekdays only, with two routes, Routes 4 and 27, offering reverse commute and midday services between San Francisco and Marin County. All routes operate via Battery, First Street, Howard, Fourth Street, and Perry southbound; Perry, Third Street, Folsom, Fremont, Front, (Pine or California), and Sansome northbound.

The typical routing for these buses is via Fisherman's Wharf:

• Southbound from Lombard & Van Ness to Battery & Broadway: Van Ness, North Point, (Polk, Beach), The Embarcadero, Battery
• Northbound from Sansome & Broadway to Lombard & Van Ness: Sansome, The Embarcadero, North Point, Van Ness

Three routes, Routes 24X, 56X, and 72X, operate via the Broadway Tunnel, stopping only at Van Ness & Union en route.

Not all Route 4 trips terminate at Strawberry (reverse commute and midday trips only); peak period trips terminate instead at E Blithedale & Tower/Kipling for easy access to and from US-101.

Route 24X mirrors Route 24, but in central Marin, the nonstop portion is longer, between Sir Francis Drake Blvd & College Avenue in Kentfield and Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza in San Francisco. Route 24 picks up and drops off additional riders in Kentfield, Greenbrae, and Larkspur.

Routes 38 and 38A are essentially the same route, but with a few, important differences:

• Route 38 operates via Freitas Parkway to Del Ganado Avenue & De La Guerra in western Terra Linda, makes a u-turn, and returns to Las Gallinas Parkway with a short version through Lucas Valley via Miller Creek Rd.
• Route 38A operates with a shortened section along Freitas Parkway (until Las Pavadas), u-turns, returns to Las Gallinas Avenue, heads north, and serves the Lucas Valley neighborhood before terminating at Miller Creek Rd & Marinwood.

Route 72, in normal circumstances, operates one trip each southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening; Route 74 provides similar service, and Route 72X provides a super express service to Routes 72, 74, 101, and 101X between San Francisco, Rohnert Park, and Santa Rosa (with an additional stop at Sonoma County Fairgrounds Park-and-Ride at Maple & Brookwood). However, due to the suspension of Routes 72X and 74, Route 72 is temporarily providing commute service.

Currently, only Routes 4, 18, 24, 27, 38, 54, 56X, and 72 are operating; the other lines are suspended. Also, no midday and reverse commute services available on Route 27 until further notice.

Information for the suspended routes are based on Spring 2020 schedule, published in March.

Commute Bus Routes via San Francisco Civic Center

These routes operate similarly to Basic Routes 30, 70, and 101 (above); however, these provide direct services to North Bay communities rather than just serving bus pads along US-101.

Three routes are offshoots of their original commuter routes, denoted with a "C" suffix. Routes 4C, 24C, and 54C were created as a replacement to the weekday, peak-period only "shuttle" service, Route 93, between Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza and San Francisco Civic Center, supplementing services already provided by Routes 30, 70, and 101.

Another route, Route 101X, operates nearly identical to the all-day, every day Route 101; however, it skips all Marin County stops in Novato and San Rafael.

One route, Route 92, operates via Park Presidio Blvd, Geary Blvd, Webster St, and McAllister St in San Francisco as a legacy of two discontinued routes, Route 50 (before 2003) and Route 10. This route provides both peak commute and reverse commute services between Marin City, Sausalito, the Richmond District, Japantown, and Fillmore District.

As of time of writing, these routes are currently suspended until further notice; alternate service available on Routes 30, 70, and 101. Transferring between Financial District and Civic Center routes can be done at either Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza or Richardson & Lyon/Francisco.

Local Routes Operated on Behalf of Marin Transit

Golden Gate Transit currently operates eight local routes on behalf of Marin Transit. These use buses purchased by Marin Transit, but are managed and operated by Golden Gate Transit workers.
